Chia is an edible seed that comes from the desert plant Salvia hispanica originally grown in Mexico by the Olmecs, the first major civilization in Mexico dating back to 1500 BCE. 'Chia' meant strength in their native language, and the Olmecs used them for energy due to their high nutrient content.

Chia Seeds are a concentrated health food with many beneficial attributes. They are a vegan and sustainable source of Omega-3 fatty acids. They are packed full of nutrients including carbohydrates, protein, fiber, antioxidants, calcium, plus vitamins and minerals.  Chia Seeds are an unprocessed, whole-grain food that can be absorbed by the body as seeds (unlike flaxseeds).

The neutral flavor of Chia Seeds makes them easy to add to foods and beverages. They are most often sprinkled on cereal, sauces, vegetables, rice dishes, or yogurt or mixed into drinks and baked goods. They can also be mixed with water or juice and made into a gel.

Due to its popularity producers have begun growing Chia Seeds in many different regions throughout the world.  However none can replicate those that have been grown in its native region where the high altitude, climate and red soil are different from any other place in the world.  Olmec Foods brand Chia Seeds are sourced exclusively from family farms throughout the high plains region known as 'Los Altos' of Jalisco Mexico, it's ancestral lands.

We hope you enjoy the powerful health benefits of our Chia Seeds as the Olmecs once did millenniums ago!
